What are Goals?
Goals are specific, measurable objectives with a fixed time frame for achieving them. Goals become the scorecard that help measure annual and quarterly progress. They can be broken down into smaller and short terms objectives, which then become checkpoints for making sure that you are on the right track. Persistence and patience are two important qualities that help in achieving one’s goals and leads to success.
However, most people quit their goals after a few weeks because the traditional goal-setting process lacks the emotion needed to sustain the motivation to stay on track. Motivation can be broken down to (motiv+ation = motive for action).
Why are Goals Important? Without clear, specific goals, even the most diligent work can turn into nothing more than dealing with interruptions between weekends.
Goals help concentrate energy: By defining what needs to be done and setting reasonable time limits, goals bring out your accomplishments.
Goals give direction: Take the cliché about traveling without a destination. It might give you pleasure if you are on a vacation, but it doesn’t make sense when you’re not. Having a destination and time frame automatically facilitates the decision regarding the route. Once the route is decided, you can check whether you are on the right track and on schedule.
Goal setting is the key to success. The starting point in helping your sales people learn how to set goals is to discover their financial needs. Once you learn what these financial needs are, then begin to focus on how they can earn the money to satisfy those needs. Help your people to form clear, specific goals, with a specific time frame.
Over time, you elevate their immediate needs and teach them how to set their own short-term goals. As they learn the process for goal setting, motivation occurs automatically causing positive reinforcement.
Join me next time as I discuss needs because we won’t achieve our goals without first identifying our needs. Until then, remember your mind is magic and you are the magician.
